Matting in coats can cause many health problems in your pup. Matting reduces airflow to the skin causing hotspots, bacterial or fungal infections, risks of fleas or parasites. The skin under the mats can be bruised, irritated, raw, and/or inflamed.
Any long haired pup can get matting but certain breeds and coats can be more prone to matting. Such as Doodles, Poodles, curly coats, Bichons, ShihTzu, etc.
If your pup has very little matting then it can be brushed out but your pup will most likely not tolerate being brushed for more than 10 minutes. This will often cause your pup to behave in a fear aggressive manner to the groomer and will make future grooms difficult and stressful for the groomer and your pup.
We love your pups as much as you do. When your pup is matted we believe in doing what is in the best interest of the pup. In many cases the best thing to do for your pup is to shave him/her down. We believe in comfort over vanity. Dematting a severely matted pup is inhumane and something we do not offer.
Good news! Hair will grow back! We can get on a regular routine (4-6 weeks) and get your pup to a mat free, healthy beautiful coat!
Once the pup is mat free, you can prevent your pup from getting mats again by line brushing. All you need is a greyhound comb and a slicker brush.
Hold or push up the coat with one hand, parting it, and work evenly over the pet. This can be done with a comb or brush but usually the comb is just reserved for checking the work of the brush. With the slicker brush on the seam line you made, pull a small amount of fur down with each stroke. Do not move to the next section until the brush glide smoothly and the skin at the seam line can be seen. The motion used for line brushing is ‘pat and pull’, Softly pat the coat with the full pad of the brush and pull out and away from the skin with each stroke, leave the wrist in neutral position and don’t flick it to avoid puncturing the dog’s skin or causing brush burn.
